From observation to form

Mónica Cid’s artistic practice is an ongoing inquiry into our inner being, the human form, and the invisible, psychological spaces we inhabit. Working with drawing, wire, clay, and found objects, she explores the subtle boundaries — whether internal, cultural, or inherented traditions — that can constrain us. In her work, the physical frame acts as a metaphor for these unseen limitations, capturing the precise moment when an entity seeks to move beyond them.

The current direction of her work, featuring pieces in development such as this work “Letting Go”, marks a quiet return to the raw, expansive energy of her 2014 wire installations. Over time, her interest has shifted away from the polished, finished end result, moving instead towards the honesty of the creative process itself.

She finds a deep joy in observing how we express ourselves, registering those observations through quick gesture drawing. In these new sculptures, she has allowed herself a greater freedom of depiction, stripping the figure down to its essential framework.

Stepping outside the frame

Stepping outside the frame

By exposing the wire skeleton and letting it carry the immediate energy of a sketch, the work reveals an inner architecture where vulnerability and structural resilience simply coexist. It is about being so engaged in the present moment of exploration that the final outcome becomes secondary, allowing the line to remain free, intuitive, and true.

This space connects different chapters of her journey, and she welcomes you to explore the paths that led here:

"A Deus" Exhibition: 2014 Archive

The roots of the three-dimensional line, where drawings escaped the sketchbook to dialogue with three dimensional space.

Beyond the Frame: 2024 Collections

A return to creative practice through full-body figurations, capturing the vital rhythm of reclaiming one's own space.

“I’ve learned — and I continue to learn — to make the act of drawing a place of pleasure. My work is not only about the artworks I create. And my life has never been solely about making art. It has been about loosening the grip of fear, expectation, and the need to do things “right”. When I draw or model from observation, something opens when I stay with what is happening now. When attention replaces control. When the focus rests on the act itself, not on the result.

Even today, I have to remind myself what makes this experience pleasurable: being present, trusting the process, and allowing what wants to appear to take form.”

Further observations

While people are at the heart of her work, Monica also draws places, objects, and everyday scenes — approached with the same quiet, focused attention.

Alongside sketchbooks and three-dimensional studies, she also works through digital drawing, using the same attentive practice — allowing form, movement, and atmosphere to emerge with calm presence.
