From observation to form

Mónica’s work begins with curiosity and careful observation.

People are her main subject. She is drawn to people not only for their bodies, expressions and gestures, but for the mystery each one holds of being alive - of being expressions of LIFE.

“I’ve learned — and I continue to learn — to make the act of drawing a place of pleasure. My work is not only about the artworks I create. And my life has never been solely about making art. It has been about loosening the grip of fear, expectation, and the need to do things “right”. When I draw or model from observation, something opens when I stay with what is happening now. When attention replaces control. When the focus rests on the act itself, not on the result.

Even today, I have to remind myself what makes this experience pleasurable: being present, trusting the process, and allowing what wants to appear to take form.”

Further observations

While people are at the heart of her work, Monica also draws places, objects, and everyday scenes — approached with the same quiet, focused attention.

Alongside sketchbooks and three-dimensional studies, she also works through digital drawing, using the same attentive practice — allowing form, movement, and atmosphere to emerge with calm presence.
